How Much Fragrance Oil to Use in Candles

If you've ever tried candle making at home, you've probably asked yourself the same question I asked when I started: how much fragrance is "enough"? Add too little and your candle may smell weak. Add too much and you can create performance problems rather than a stronger result. In candle making, one of the most important variables is the fragrance percentage, known as the fragrance load. The appropriate load depends on the wax and the product type. According to Cargill's NatureWax fragrance-load guidance, soy wax is generally listed at around 6% to 10%, while rapeseed wax is listed at around 6% to 12%. These are general guidelines rather than a specification for every wax from every supplier. At MPATZAKA, after testing, we use 10% for our handmade candles in jars and decorative candles. Our wax melts are made with Cargill NatureWax rapeseed wax and use a 12% fragrance load in our tested formula.

In this article we'll break down what that means in practice, why the correct fragrance load matters, what can go wrong when you exceed the recommended level, and I'll also share the percentages we use in MPATZAKA products.

How Fragrance Load Works in Practice

Let's make this as simple as possible, because this is where most beginners get confused. Fragrance load is commonly calculated as a percentage of the wax weight, not the final mixture weight.

In other words:

  • For every 100 grams of wax, many soy candle recipes are tested within a range of around 6 to 10 grams of fragrance oil, depending on the wax supplier's guidance.
  • At MPATZAKA, our chosen point for scented jar candles and decorative candles is 10 grams of fragrance oil per 100 grams of wax.
  • For our Cargill NatureWax rapeseed-wax melts, we use 12 grams of fragrance oil per 100 grams of wax in our tested formula. Cargill's general NatureWax FAQ lists rapeseed wax at around 6% to 12%.

If you are working with 200g of wax, a 10% fragrance load means you add 20g of fragrance oil, giving you 220g of total mixture. But if your container's final fill weight is 200g total, you need to calculate backwards. At a 10% fragrance load calculated on wax weight, that is approximately 181.8g of wax + 18.2g of fragrance oil = 200g total mixture.

This is why a precision scale is one of the most useful pieces of equipment in candlemaking. Measuring by weight makes a recipe repeatable from one batch to the next.

One important detail: fragrance oils are best measured by weight in grams, not by volume in millilitres. Fragrance oils have different densities, so 10ml is not necessarily 10g. Always weigh your ingredients when working from a weight-based fragrance load.

Why Can Lower Fragrance Loads Give a Weaker Scent?

Here we answer one of the most common complaints from people starting out with handmade candles: "my candle smells lovely unlit, but when I burn it, the scent disappears."

In the candle world we talk about two different things:

  • Cold throw: how strong the candle smells unlit.
  • Hot throw: how well the fragrance disperses while the candle is burning.

Soy wax is a plant-based wax that can be sensitive to fragrance load, wick choice, temperature, cure time, fragrance chemistry, and vessel size. At a lower fragrance load, some formulas may produce a weaker hot throw, but simply increasing the percentage is not always the solution.

There is no universal percentage that guarantees a strong candle. The best approach is to work within the wax supplier's recommended range and test the complete combination of wax, fragrance oil, wick, and vessel. If a candle underperforms, the cause may be the fragrance load, wick selection, cure time, temperature control, or the fragrance itself.

Why Not Automatically Use More Than 10% in Soy Candles?

This is where the "more is better" logic can fail. Every wax has a recommended fragrance range or practical capacity. Once you exceed what the wax and fragrance combination has been tested to handle, the fragrance may not incorporate or burn as intended, and problems can begin:

1. The candle can sweat. Droplets of oil may appear on the surface of the wax, especially with temperature changes. Free fragrance oil can also create a safety concern around an open flame.

2. The wick can struggle. Too much fragrance oil can change how the candle burns. The flame may become weak, flicker, tunnel, or go out.

3. Smoking and soot can increase. An unbalanced wax, fragrance, and wick combination may produce more smoke or soot.

4. More fragrance does not guarantee better hot throw. If the candle no longer burns correctly, adding more fragrance can reduce overall performance rather than improve it.

In other words, exceeding the recommended fragrance load is not automatically a way to make a stronger candle. Always follow the wax and fragrance supplier guidance and validate the finished product through burn testing.

Our Recipe: NatureWax C-310 at 10%

At MPATZAKA, after extensive testing, we settled on a combination that works for our scented jar candles: we use Cargill NatureWax C-310, a vegetable wax based on European-sourced soybeans and designed for scented container candles and tealights, with a 10% fragrance load.

Cargill's general NatureWax guidance lists a fragrance-load range of around 6–10% for soy wax. Our 10% recipe sits at the upper end of that general soy-wax guidance, and in our own tested jar, wick, and fragrance combinations it gives us:

  • A rich, consistent hot throw
  • A smooth, creamy appearance
  • A clean, stable burn in our tested wick and container combinations
  • Batch-to-batch consistency

In numbers: for 200g of wax, that means 200g of melted C-310 + 20g of fragrance oil = 220g of mixture. Simple, measurable, repeatable.

Separately, our decorative candles also use a 10% fragrance load. For our wax melts, we use 12% in our tested Cargill NatureWax rapeseed-wax formula. Cargill's general guidance lists rapeseed wax at 6–12%, and we validate our finished wax-melt formula through our own testing.

Three Factors That Make Fragrance Perform Better

The right percentage is only part of the job. If you're wondering how to make scented candles that perform consistently, pay attention to these factors as well:

The temperature matters. According to Cargill's NatureWax C-310 product data sheet, the wax may be melted at about 75°C to incorporate colours and fragrances. A recommended starting pour range is around 55–65°C, although the ideal pouring temperature can change depending on room temperature, container size, fragrance oil, and testing.

Give it cure time. The same C-310 data sheet recommends allowing the candle to cool and cure for at least 12 hours before use. Some candle makers choose to wait longer before making a final scent evaluation, but that is an additional testing practice rather than Cargill's stated minimum cure time.

Use fragrance oils intended for the application. Choose fragrance oils supplied for candle or wax-melt use and follow the supplier's recommended maximum use level and relevant safety documentation.
