How Much Fragrance Oil to Use in Candles

If you've ever tried candle making at home, you've probably asked yourself the same question I asked when I started: how much fragrance is "enough"? Add too little and your candle barely smells of anything. Add too much and you'd think it would smell amazing — but in practice, the exact opposite often happens. In candle making, one of the most important rules is controlling the fragrance percentage, known as the fragrance load. For many container soy waxes, a practical working range is around 6% to 10% of the wax weight, with the 7% to 10% range often used for stronger scented candles. In this article we'll break down what that means in practice, why this range matters, what can go wrong when you step outside it, and I'll also share our own recipe — the wax and fragrance percentages we use in MPATZAKA products.

What a 6–10% Fragrance Load Means in Practice

Let's make this as simple as possible, because this is where most beginners get confused. The fragrance load is calculated on the weight of the wax, not on the total mixture.

In other words:

  • For every 100 grams of wax, many soy candle makers test around 6 to 10 grams of fragrance oil.
  • At MPATZAKA, our chosen point for scented jar candles and decorative candles is 8 grams of fragrance oil per 100 grams of wax.
  • For wax melts, we use 10 grams of fragrance oil per 100 grams of wax.

If you are working with 200g of wax, an 8% fragrance load means you add 16g of fragrance oil, giving you 216g of total mixture. But if your container’s final fill weight is 200g total, you need to calculate backwards. At 8%, that would be about 185g of wax + 15g of fragrance oil = 200g total mixture.

This is why a precision scale is arguably the most important piece of equipment you'll ever buy for candlemaking — more important than the fragrance itself. Makers who measure "by eye" or by the spoonful can never reproduce a successful result, because they don't know exactly what they did the previous time.

One important detail: fragrance oils for candles are measured in grams, not millilitres. Fragrance oils have a different density from water, so 10ml is not always 10g. Always weigh.

Why Not Less Than 7%?

Here we answer the most common complaint from people starting out with handmade candles: "my candle smells lovely unlit, but when I burn it, the scent disappears."

In the candle world we talk about two different things:

  • Cold throw: how strong the candle smells unlit, like when you sniff it on a shop shelf.
  • Hot throw: how well it fills the room with scent while burning — which is what you're actually paying for in scented candles.

Soy wax is a natural plant-based wax with a smooth, creamy finish, but it can be more sensitive to fragrance load, wick choice, temperature, and cure time than some other waxes. Below roughly 6–7%, many soy candles may start to show weaker hot throw, especially if the wick is too small, the candle has not cured long enough, or the fragrance oil itself is not strong.

Around 7–8% is often a strong starting point for testing a noticeable hot throw in a normal-sized room. This is why so many natural soy candles from inexperienced makers disappoint: it is not always the wax's fault. The issue is often an under-loaded fragrance, the wrong wick, not enough cure time, or poor temperature control during production.

Why Not More Than 10%?

This is where the "more is better" logic collapses. Every wax has a maximum amount of fragrance it can comfortably hold. Once you exceed that point, the fragrance may stop incorporating properly, and the problems can begin:

1. The candle can sweat. Droplets of oil may appear on the surface of the wax, especially with temperature changes. Beyond looking unappealing, free fragrance oil near an open flame can also become a safety concern.

2. The wick can struggle. Too much fragrance oil can affect how the wick burns. The flame may shrink, flicker, tunnel, or go out entirely. Many makers assume they chose the wrong wick size, when the real problem may be an overloaded fragrance.

3. Smoking and soot can increase. A candle that is not balanced properly may produce smoke and sooty marks on the glass — the exact opposite of the clean, stable burn we want from a natural soy candle.

4. The scent can become worse, not better. Yes, you read that right. If the candle burns poorly, the hot throw may drop instead of improve. You pay for more fragrance oil and get a less stable result.

In other words, going above the recommended fragrance load is not automatically a way to make a stronger candle — it can simply create a more expensive and less reliable product.

Our Recipe: NatureWax C-310 at 8%

At MPATZAKA, after a lot of testing, we settled on a combination that works beautifully for our scented jar candles: we use Cargill NatureWax C-310, a soy wax designed for scented container candles, and we add an 8% fragrance load.

Why 8% and not 10%? Supplier guidance for NatureWax C-310 commonly places the fragrance-load range around 6–10%, and our 8% recipe sits safely within that practical working range. In our own testing, 8% is the point where we get:

  • A rich, consistent hot throw
  • A smooth, creamy surface with no sweating
  • A clean, stable burn when the wick is trimmed and the candle is used correctly
  • Batch-to-batch consistency — every candle smells as close as possible to the previous one

In numbers: for 200g of wax, that means 200g of melted C-310 + 16g of fragrance oil = 216g of mixture. Simple, measurable, repeatable. This level of precision is what allows handmade candles to match — and in many cases outperform — mass-produced ones.

For our decorative candles, we also use an 8% fragrance load. For our wax melts, we use 10%, because there is no wick to manage and the product is designed to release fragrance through a warmer rather than through a flame.

Three Secrets That Make the Fragrance Perform Better

The right percentage is half the job. If you're wondering how to make scented candles that actually perform, pay attention to these as well:

The temperature matters. For NatureWax C-310, Cargill’s guidance says the wax may be melted at about 75°C to incorporate colours and fragrances. After adding fragrance, stir gently and consistently so the oil is evenly dispersed before pouring. A good starting pour range for C-310 is around 55–65°C, although the ideal pouring temperature can change depending on room temperature, container size, fragrance oil, and testing.

Give it cure time. Cargill recommends allowing NatureWax C-310 candles to cool and cure for at least 12 hours before use. In practice, many soy candle makers allow several days — sometimes 1–2 weeks — before final scent testing, because hot throw can continue to improve after the candle has settled.

Use fragrance oils made for candles. Not body fragrances, not untested essential oils — proper candle fragrance oils are formulated to withstand heat and perform safely in candle applications. For wax melts, fragrance load is also calculated by wax weight, but the ideal percentage depends on the wax blend and supplier guidance.
