When choosing a scented candle, fragrance is usually the first thing you notice. But the type of wax also influences how a candle behaves, how it looks and how it performs while burning.

Two of the most widely used candle waxes are soy-based vegetable wax and paraffin wax.

So, what is the actual difference between soy wax and paraffin wax? Which one performs better? Does soy last longer? And does one automatically make a higher-quality candle?

The short answer is: not necessarily. The finished candle matters more than the wax name alone.

Soy Wax vs Paraffin Wax: The Quick Answer

Soy wax is vegetable-based and is made using soybean-derived materials, while paraffin wax is derived from petroleum refining.

Soy-based waxes are widely used for scented container candles, while paraffin is highly versatile and can be used across many candle formats.

Neither wax automatically produces a better candle. A candle's performance depends on the complete formulation: wax + wick + fragrance + vessel + candle dimensions + testing.

At MPATZAKA, we use Cargill NatureWax C-310 soy-based vegetable wax in our scented container candles, together with a 10% fragrance load by wax weight, following our own product-development and testing process.

The most important point is simple: wax type is only one component of candle quality.

What Is Soy Wax?

Soy wax belongs to the broader category of vegetable waxes and is produced using soybean-derived oils.

It is widely used in scented container candles because certain soy-based wax formulations are particularly well suited to jars and similar vessels.

However, the term “soy wax” does not describe one universal material. Different commercial soy waxes can have different compositions, melting characteristics, hardness, fragrance compatibility, surface behaviour and recommended applications. That means two candles marketed as soy candles can perform very differently.

The Soy-Based Wax We Use at MPATZAKA

For our scented container candles, MPATZAKA uses Cargill NatureWax C-310.

Cargill describes NatureWax C-310 as a proprietary blend of hydrogenated vegetable glycerides based on European-sourced soybeans, designed for applications including scented container candles and tealights. Its technical specification lists a dropping point of 51–55°C. [1]

That does not mean every C-310 candle will behave identically. The finished result still depends on the fragrance, fragrance concentration, wick, container, candle dimensions, pouring process and testing.

What Is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin is a mineral wax produced through petroleum refining.

It has been used in candle manufacturing for many years because it is highly versatile and is available in different grades suited to different applications.

Depending on its formulation, paraffin can be used for container candles, pillar candles, tealights, votives, decorative candles and other candle formats.

Paraffin can also provide strong fragrance performance and a smooth, consistent finish in many formulations. However, just like soy wax, paraffin wax is not one single formula. Its performance depends on the specific wax grade and the complete candle design.

Soy Wax vs Paraffin Wax: 6 Key Differences

The clearest difference is their origin.

Soy-based wax is derived from vegetable materials. Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum refining.

For customers who specifically prefer materials originating from renewable agricultural sources, this can make soy-based wax more appealing. But material origin alone does not determine how well a candle will burn.

2. Burn Behaviour

One of the most common claims online is that soy candles always burn more slowly or last longer than paraffin candles. That is too simplistic.

There is no universal rule that every soy candle will burn longer than every paraffin candle.

Experimental research on candle combustion shows that both wick characteristics and fuel properties influence burning rate, flame behaviour and melt-pool development. [2]

Important variables include wick material and size, wax formulation, candle diameter, vessel geometry, fragrance concentration, airflow, flame conditions and burn-session length.

This means the tested burn time of the finished candle is more useful than making assumptions based only on whether the label says soy or paraffin.

3. Fragrance Performance

Which has better scent throw: soy or paraffin?

There is no universal winner. Paraffin is widely used in fragranced candles and can provide strong fragrance performance, while correctly formulated soy-based container waxes can also deliver excellent hot and cold scent throw.

Fragrance performance depends on the complete system: wax + fragrance oil + fragrance load + wick + vessel + candle size.

Simply adding more fragrance does not automatically produce a stronger or better candle.

At MPATZAKA, our current scented-candle formulation uses a 10% fragrance load by wax weight.

For example: 200 g wax + 20 g fragrance oil = 220 g total candle mixture.

We selected this formulation based on the balance we want between scent performance, candle behaviour and production consistency.

4. Appearance

Soy-based vegetable waxes can show natural surface variations after pouring, heating or cooling.

Depending on the wax and conditions, you may notice slight texture changes, crystallisation patterns, surface irregularities or differences after repeated burns. These can be cosmetic characteristics of vegetable wax and do not automatically indicate a defective candle.

Paraffin formulations are often capable of producing a very smooth and uniform visual finish. However, a perfectly smooth candle is not automatically a better-performing candle.

5. Raw-Material Source and Sustainability

Soy-based wax originates from agricultural raw materials and is therefore derived from a renewable biological source. Paraffin originates from fossil-fuel refining.

This is a genuine difference, but it would be inaccurate to judge the entire environmental impact of a finished candle from the wax alone.

A candle's broader footprint can also be affected by agricultural sourcing, manufacturing, fragrance production, vessel production, packaging, transport, product lifespan and end-of-life disposal.

For this reason, we prefer to describe our wax accurately as a soy-based vegetable wax rather than make broad claims that a candle is automatically sustainable simply because it contains soy-derived material.

6. Candle Applications

Different waxes are chosen for different technical reasons. Certain soy-based vegetable waxes are particularly suited to container candles. Paraffin is available in formulations suited to a broad range of applications, including both container and freestanding candles.

A candle maker may consider whether the candle needs to hold its own shape, the diameter of the candle, the vessel, the fragrance, the desired finish, wick compatibility and intended burn behaviour.

The correct wax therefore depends heavily on the product being designed.

Does Soy Wax Burn Longer Than Paraffin Wax?

Not necessarily.

Wax type alone cannot predict total burn time. A candle's burn rate depends on wick size and material, wax formulation, candle diameter, total wax mass, fragrance content, vessel design and burning conditions.

Research into candle combustion also shows that wick characteristics can significantly influence burning rate and melt-pool development. [2]

For consumers, the better number to look at is the tested burn time of the finished candle. A well-designed paraffin candle can outlast a poorly designed soy candle, and vice versa.

Which Wax Has Better Scent Throw?

There is no universal winner.

Both paraffin and correctly formulated soy-based container waxes can provide strong fragrance performance. The result depends on the wax, fragrance concentration, wick, vessel and complete candle design.

At MPATZAKA, we formulate our scented candles using Cargill NatureWax C-310 + 10% fragrance load by wax weight. But fragrance concentration alone is not enough: the wick, vessel, wax and fragrance must work together.

A candle containing more fragrance oil is not automatically a better or stronger candle.

Does Soy Wax Produce Less Soot Than Paraffin?

This is one of the areas where candle marketing can become misleading. Claims such as “soy candles produce no soot” or “paraffin candles are toxic” oversimplify a much more complex subject.

No combustible candle wax is completely soot-free

Soot is associated with incomplete combustion. The amount produced by a candle can be influenced by factors such as wick length, flame stability, drafts, wax formulation, fragrance and burning conditions.

The National Candle Association notes that there is no such thing as a completely soot-free candle wax and highlights factors including wick length and flame disturbance. [3]

That means the better question is not simply “Is the candle soy or paraffin?” but “Has the candle been properly formulated, wicked and tested?”

Correct candle care also matters. A poorly maintained wick can influence flame behaviour regardless of the wax type.

What Does the Research Say?

Scientific research on candles does not support reducing the entire subject to “soy good, paraffin bad”.

Laboratory research has shown that both wick properties and fuel characteristics affect burn rate, flame behaviour and melt-pool formation. [2]

Research into scented-candle emissions has also identified substantial differences between individual candle formulations, with raw-material composition and additives among the factors capable of influencing measured emissions. [4]

The practical conclusion is: a candle should be evaluated as a finished product rather than judged by one ingredient alone.

This is one reason testing is so important in candle making.

What About Soy-Paraffin Blends?

Not every candle consists entirely of one wax family. Wax manufacturers can create blends that combine different materials to achieve specific properties.

Soy-paraffin blends may be designed to influence hardness, surface appearance, fragrance performance, melting behaviour and production characteristics.

The exact formulation therefore matters more than simply seeing the word “soy” somewhere on a product page.

Are All Soy Candles 100% Soy Wax?

Not necessarily.

Soy-containing wax blends exist, and commercial formulations vary significantly between manufacturers.

A candle may use a predominantly soy-based wax, a proprietary vegetable-wax blend, soy combined with other vegetable waxes or a soy-paraffin blend.

What We Evaluate

Fragrance performance

We assess how the fragrance develops when the candle is cold and while it is burning.

Surface behaviour

We look at how the wax behaves after pouring and during normal candle use.

Burn behaviour

We observe whether the candle burns in a stable and consistent manner when used correctly.

Production consistency

A formulation needs to work not only once, but repeatedly across production batches.

For our current scented-candle formulation, 10% fragrance load gives us the balance we want between fragrance performance and overall candle behaviour.

Why Candle Testing Matters More Than the Wax Label

Imagine two candles. Both say “soy candle.”

The first candle has an appropriately selected wick, a tested fragrance concentration, a suitable vessel and a formulation developed through repeated testing.

The second uses a different wick, fragrance concentration and container without the same development process.

Despite both being described as soy candles, their performance can be completely different.

This is why a better question is “How was this candle formulated and tested?” rather than simply “What wax does it use?”

Soy or Paraffin: Which Should You Choose?

Consider a soy-based candle if:

  • you prefer vegetable-derived wax materials;
  • you are looking for a scented container candle designed specifically around a soy-based wax;
  • the manufacturer provides clear product and testing information.

Consider a paraffin candle if:

  • the formulation suits the candle's intended purpose;
  • particular structural or appearance characteristics are important;
  • the finished candle has been properly designed and tested.

In either case, look at the finished product

When comparing candles, consider wax formulation, wick behaviour, tested burn time, fragrance performance, manufacturing quality, candle-care information and brand transparency.

A well-made candle is a complete system, not a single ingredient.

But that does not tell you which finished candle will perform better.

Burn time, scent throw, flame behaviour and overall quality depend on the interaction between wax + wick + fragrance + candle dimensions + vessel + formulation + testing.
