What Are Wax Melts?

Wax melts are pieces of fragranced wax designed to release scent when warmed rather than burned with their own wick. A portion of wax is placed in a suitable wax melt burner. As the wax warms, fragrance is released into the surrounding space.

Because you can use smaller portions at a time, wax melts are especially useful if you enjoy changing fragrances regularly or exploring different scent profiles.

How Do Wax Melts Work?

Unlike a candle, a wax melt does not contain a wick. Heat from a suitable burner warms the fragranced wax and allows it to release scent. Some burners use a tealight, while others may use electricity. Always follow the instructions supplied with your burner.

How to Use Wax Melts

1. Place your wax melt burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
2. Add an appropriate amount of wax melt to the burner dish.
3. Use the burner according to its instructions.
4. Allow the wax to warm and release fragrance.
5. When finished, stop the heat source and allow the wax to cool completely before handling it.

Never overfill the burner dish and always follow the safety instructions provided with your burner.

How Long Do Wax Melts Last?

There is no universal number of hours that applies to every wax melt. Fragrance duration depends on the wax formulation, fragrance concentration and composition, amount of wax, burner type and temperature, room size, airflow and the length of each warming session.

Wax melts can often be warmed across multiple sessions until their fragrance becomes noticeably weaker.

What Are Scented Candles?

Scented candles combine wax, fragrance and a wick in one finished product. As the candle burns, fragrance is released into the room, but scent is only part of the experience.

A flame also introduces movement, soft light and visual warmth, making scented candles particularly suited to evenings, dinners and quiet moments at home.

At MPATZAKA, our scented container candles are hand-poured in small batches using a soy-based vegetable wax formulation.

What We’ve Learned From Making Both Candles and Wax Melts

More fragrance does not automatically mean better fragrance performance.

Our current MPATZAKA formulations use 10% fragrance load for Scented Candles and 12% fragrance load for Wax Melts.

That does not mean a wax melt will automatically smell “20% stronger” than a scented candle. The two products release fragrance differently.

In a scented candle, performance depends on the complete system: wax + fragrance + wick + vessel + candle dimensions + testing. With a wax melt, performance depends instead on variables such as the wax formulation, amount used, fragrance, burner and warming conditions.

Which Smells Stronger: Wax Melts or Candles?

There is no universal winner. Fragrance performance depends on formulation, fragrance concentration, fragrance composition, amount of wax, room size, airflow, temperature and how the product is used. For scented candles, wick selection and vessel dimensions also influence performance.

The better question is not simply “Which one is stronger?” but “Which fragrance experience do I prefer?”

Which Creates More Atmosphere?

For visual atmosphere, scented candles have a clear advantage. The movement and warmth of a real flame changes the feeling of a room in a way that fragrance alone cannot. Wax melts are more fragrance-focused, although a ceramic burner can also become part of your interior.

Which Is Better for Changing Scents?

Wax melts make fragrance rotation particularly easy because smaller amounts of wax can be used. You might prefer something fruity during the day, a warmer scent in the evening, richer gourmand notes during colder months or fresher profiles in spring and summer.

A scented candle creates a more complete individual fragrance experience and works especially well once you have found a scent you want to return to regularly.

Do Wax Melts Need a Burner?

Yes. Wax melts require an appropriate burner or warmer to heat the wax and release fragrance. Some burners use a tealight, so although the wax melt itself has no wick, the complete setup is not necessarily flame-free.

What About Soy Candles?

“Soy candle” refers to the wax formulation, while “scented candle” refers to a candle containing fragrance. A candle can therefore be both.

A Note on Fragrance Formulation and Safety
